My Teaching Practices with ABM 12

The experiences of having my teaching practices in ABM 12 class was incredible. At first, I thought it will be difficult for me to teach 12 graders. Besides, my first impression of ABM 12 when I observed them was not quite a good sign for me. However, it was wiped away when I had done my first teaching practice. They loved participating and were so creative. I used points as reinforcement for them to participating in the class. The idea was they would collect points as many as the could by participating in the class, the 4 highest point collector will be given special souvenirs. This trick was quite arousing for them because on the next meeting they were exciting to collect points.

For my teaching practice, I liked to group them and let them solving problem together. For grouping system, sometimes I asked them to count for the specific number or gave them mini stickers with numbers of the groups on it. During the group discussion, I always made sure that everyone in the group shared their opinion.

monitoring the group discussion

I always made every groups present their discussion results in front of the class. Did you remember when I mentioned that they were creative? yeah, this part was always be my favorite. They did not only present the result but also perform it. The performances were so creative and refreshing, in some way it also rose the pace of the class. I was so grateful for that.

they performed their discussion result.

I was beholden for having ABM 12 class for my teaching practices at TAU Laboratory School. Their personalities and behaviors were very helpful especially since I was observed by my cooperating teacher and supervisor.

Lesson Plans

Comparing to Indonesia, here in TAU Laboratory School the lesson plan used is way simpler. There were two types of lesson plan forms mentioned before, detail and semi detail. For our teaching practice, we were asked to make the semi detail lesson plan. I prepared two lesson plans for my teaching practice in ABM 12 which materials are Imagery and Sound Devices. Usually I gave the drafts of my lesson plans to my cooperating teacher a day before my teaching practice so that she could make sure it was okay to proceed the plan.

The First Week: English Conversation Class and Class Observation

After the opening ceremony and the school observation, my first week officially started. The first agenda was on September 3 which was English Conversation Class with, surprisingly, my sweet cooperating teacher, Ma’am Faith G. Santos. It was held in Audio Visual Room beside the faculty office. Not only learning basic English, which were very important for us since we have to teach in English, we were also taught a little bit about history of the Philippines. The class was great, Ma’am Faith told us to tell our unforgettable moments before going to the Philippines.

The first week was also dedicated for class observation and our deployment. The class observation was objected to make us learn about the class environment, the students’ personalities, our cooperating teachers’ teaching styles, and other things which will help us in our teaching practice. After that, we will be deployed for which class and course we will teach for our teaching practice. Luckily, I could attend not only the class of my own cooperating teacher, Ma’am Faith, but also the class of Ma’am Editha, my friend’s cooperating teacher.

Ma’am Editha’s Class – HUMS 12

In Ma’am Editha’s class which was HUMS (Humanities and Social Sciences)12, she taught about type of character in literature. She loved asking for her students’ opinion and relating the material with things that students were familiar with.

Ma’am Faith’s class – ABM 12

Ma’am Faith also taught 12 grade students but in other strand which was ABM (Accountancy, Business and Management). On the observation day, Ma’am Faith was teaching about literary works. Her teaching style was dividing her students to work in group. The students seemed enjoying her teaching style that was why I used group work the most as my teaching strategy. And yeah, I was deployed to teach in ABM 12 class for 21st Century Literature course.

The Beginning of My Teaching Practice Voyage in Tarlac Agricultural University

After all the teaching practice students had settled at Farmer Training Centre which was our dorm for almost a month, the program started with the welcoming ceremony. It was held on Monday morning, September 2, 2019 at the TAU Hostel Function Hall by the staffs of External Linkage and International Affairs (ELIA) of Tarlac Agricultural University to welcome all the teaching practice students from Indonesia. It was a warmth welcoming ceremony for us because everyone was there, not only the staffs of ELIA but also the President of TAU, Dr. Max P. Guillermo, the principal of TAU Laboratory School, Karen A. Mariano, and the teachers who were our cooperating teachers and supervisors. We also received TAU bags, books, pens, pencils, and key chains which were very useful for the program. The ceremony was about 3 hours including the lunch and signing our internship plans under the help of the internship coordinator, Ma’am Analyn Diane P. Silverio.

Ma’am Karen was taking us around the school.

The day was continued with school observation which took the entire evening of that day. Ma’am Anlyn, as the internship coordinator, and Ma’am Karen, as the school principal, were in charge to take us around for the school observation. We were taken to look around the school, the laboratories, the offices, the classrooms, the offices, the canteen, and even to the college area. We also met few teachers and students while we were wandering around. The observation was really helpful because we got to know the school well and would not be confused during the program if we need to go anywhere. The first day of our program ended with us going back to FTC.
